"Her wild side' is an article published in a leading English daily on abusive women. Its about physical abuse of husbands by their wives. An interesting read, it echoes the plight of battered husbands. My knee jerk reaction was anger. I saw the article as a ploy to weaken/de-emphasise the issue of Violence against women. However as knee jerk reactions go, this one soon gave way to a much deeper introspection (i have a lot of time on my hands now).
Does Violence and Discrimination have sex? (not bamwham you perverts, sex as in male and female identity) What makes a human being beat/punch/kick etc another human being? What makes it okay for people to relieve their frustration/anger on others in this manner? I believe its all about power and control. There is strong need to dominate and control another human being through fear, humiliation and brute force. When you cut down all the jargon and talk around gender discrimination and violence or any form of discrimination and violence all we get is plain discrimination and violence without the prefixes and labels. And Violence needs to protested against, be it within the household, on the streets, in a police station, in a school, against a man, woman, child, transgender.
Violence has no labels, no tags...all it has is the belief that brute force, guilt, social norms, culture will let you get away with it.
Does violence have a gender...i would say yes...coz Gender is intrinsically linked to power relations. Its not a simple you have a penis, i have a uterus/vagina differentiation. Gender can easily lead to violence and discrimination because it is associated with culture and notions of good, bad, pure and evil. Any challenge to these affect the existing status quo and power structure which for obvious reasons is resisted by vested interests most of the times through violence.
This segregation of discrimination has led to us being silent on other forms of discrimination..it could also be an answer to the discrimination within discrimination...for eg a Dominant caste women discriminating against a SC/ST man or woman or the violence and discrimination against SC/ST girls and women within their households
